The Summer School Women, Peace and Security offers a unique opportunity for young people and professionals from the Western Balkans to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge on gender, and the role of women and youth in peacebuilding and security in post-conflict societies. Grounded in the global Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), and complemented by the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda, the programme addresses pressing challenges related to gender-based violence, political participation, inclusive peace processes, and security sector reform. Special emphasis is placed on the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region, where limited inclusion of women and youth continue to affect long-term peace and security. The Summer School seeks to empower participants to critically engage with the WPS and YPS agendas, and to develop inclusive policy approaches through case studies, field visits, and interactive learning formats.

The programme is hosted by the University of Sarajevo - Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security Studies and will be delivered in English, without simultaneous translation.

It is organized with the support of the United Nations, through the UN Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) initiatives: Women Lead the Way Towards Peace and Security in Bosnia and Herzegovina (implemented by UN Women, IOM and UNFPA in partnership with the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH), and regional Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality & Trust (implemented by UN agencies and offices led by UNDP in Serbia, in collaboration with UN Women Albania).

All interested candidates are required to submit their application via the official online form no later than August 12, 2025. The number of available spots is limited abd the organizers reserve the right to select the most qualified applicants based on the quality of their application and demonstrated interest in the subject matter.

Students from Western Balkan countries are especially encouraged to apply. Additionally, a limited number of places are reserved for international students from outside the region who show a strong academic or professional interest in gender, peacebuilding, and security studies. All participation costs – including travel, accommodation, meals, and tuition – will be fully covered by the organizers.
